Why buy a resale on Gibraltar Plates

Official transfer

Ownership is transferred on the official register and a new certificate is issued in your name — recognised by the DVLD, ready for your vehicle.

Secure settlement

You pay through the platform's regulated checkout, never the seller directly. The seller is paid only after the transfer to you completes.

A finite asset

Gibraltar registrations are a finite public asset. Resales are the only way back to one-of-a-kind plates that left the market years ago.

How resales work

One marketplace, two sides — both settled by the platform from start to finish.

Buying a resale plate

  1. Pick your plate. Browse the listings below — every price is fixed by the current owner, so there is no bidding and no waiting.
  2. Pay securely. Check out by card or bank transfer through the regulated Gibraltar Plates checkout.
  3. Receive ownership. We complete the transfer and issue a new certificate in your name. Assign the plate to your Gibraltar-registered vehicle whenever you are ready.

Selling your plate

  1. List it in minutes. From My Plates, set a fixed asking price of £1,250 or more. A plate still on a vehicle is first placed on retention.
  2. We handle the sale. Your listing appears here and on the plate browser. The buyer pays the platform — you never chase payment.
  3. Get paid. The government resale commission is deducted from the sale price and the remainder is credited to your balance, ready to withdraw.

Resale questions, answered

More detail across the whole platform is in the FAQ and the guidance notes.

What is a plate resale?

A resale is a Gibraltar registration plate that already belongs to a private owner and is listed for sale on Gibraltar Plates at a fixed price set by the owner. When you buy it, the registration is transferred to you and a new certificate is issued in your name.

Is buying a resale plate secure?

Yes. Payment is taken through the platform's secure, regulated checkout — never sent to the seller directly — and the ownership transfer is completed by Gibraltar Plates before the seller receives the proceeds.

How do I buy a resale plate?

Open a listing, choose Buy Now and pay by card or bank transfer. Gibraltar Plates takes care of the ownership transfer and issues your new certificate; you can then assign the plate to your Gibraltar-registered vehicle whenever you are ready.

Can I put a resale plate on my vehicle?

Yes. Once the transfer completes you can assign the registration to a Gibraltar-registered vehicle through the DVLD, or simply hold it on certificate until you need it.

How do I sell my own plate?

Sign in, open My Plates and choose to sell your plate. Set a fixed asking price of £1,250 or more and publish your listing. If the plate is currently on a vehicle it must first be placed on retention before it can be listed.
